To enhance visitor safety and preserve the iconic landscape of the Lahbab desert, the UAE government has implemented new transit regulations for desert safari routes. Effective immediately, access to the deep red dunes of Lahbab is restricted to certified 4×4 off-road vehicles. Buses and standard passenger cars are no longer permitted on these specific desert routes.
The Lahbab desert is renowned for having some of the tallest and most challenging sand dunes in the Emirates. Under the new guidelines, only specialised 4×4 vehicles-equipped with mandatory safety roll cages and driven by RTA-licensed safari guides-are authorised to navigate the terrain.
Improving the Tourist Experience – This move is designed to eliminate the risks associated with unsuitable vehicles entering soft sand areas, which often lead to mechanical failures and long recovery delays. By streamlining transport to 4×4-only fleets, tour operators can ensure a seamless, high-adrenaline experience for guests while adhering to the highest safety protocols.
What This Means for Travelers
Safe Transit – Guests will be picked up in luxury 4×4 vehicles directly from their locations or designated meeting points.
No More Bus Transfers – The practice of using large buses to transport groups to the desert edge for “shuttle” transfers is being phased out in favor of direct 4×4 tours.
Expert Navigation – Every vehicle entering the dunes must be operated by a professional trained in desert recovery and sand navigation.
