apollo the Solar deity of Greco-Romans

Dr Archana Verma

In previous posts I have talked about the Persian goddess Anahita and her connection with solar deity Mihir/Mithra and the Indian Goddess ho is a sister of Vishnu who is associated the solar deity Surya/Mithra. In the Greco-Roman culture, Apollo the solar god was a twin brother of Artemis in Greece and Diana in Rome.

Apollo was associated with rulership, strategic wafare, children’s welfare, medicine, agriculture, music and artisans. He is shown with the lyre and bow.

He was associated with oracle cult and his min oracle temple was at Delphi.

His main epithet was Phoebus i.e., light. He is known Apullu in Etruscan culture.

He was a healer and protector.

He was said to have won many wars against giants.
