The UNESCO Regional Office for South Asia is assisting local artisans from Taj Ganj, Agra, who specialise in Pachchi Kari, an intricate marble inlay craft, in becoming cultural entrepreneurs under UNESCO’s World Heritage, Sustainable Development and Local Communities Programme. A two-days entrepreneurship workshop was held on 7–8 May 2025, in Taj Ganj, Agra.
In addition to entrepreneurship training, UNESCO’s broader engagement in Taj Ganj under this initiative includes skills development, improved access to welfare schemes and markets and outreach to local youth through heritage walks and educational programmes, all designed to foster deeper cultural awareness and inter-generational pride in traditional arts.
UNESCO’s initiative in Taj Ganj illustrates how safeguarding living heritage can serve as a foundation for community resilience and sustainable livelihoods. By equipping artisans with business skills and expanding opportunities for creative engagement, this programme helps ensure that the art of Parchin Kari is not only safeguarded but also reimagined for a new generation.
